CHAPTER ELEVEN

WHILE MACYN AND DEVON were waiting on Bobby to arrive, she decided to call Paul. She was surprised he hadn’t called already. When he answered, Macyn asked, “Have you been able to find anything on the Luther guy from Blackwood?”

“I was getting ready to call you with the information.”

Macyn didn’t know why, but his response pissed her off. “Every time Devon and I ask you to do something, you tell us you’ll get right back to us, but we end up having to get in touch with you and your response is always that you were getting ready to call us. I’m sick of this shit, Paul. You can either start being more prompt, or you can look for a job elsewhere. Devon and I don’t work for you. You work for us, and you had better remember that. I don’t have the fucking patience to deal with you today. E-mail me the information, and I expect it within two minutes.” Macyn slammed her phone onto the bed.

“What was that all about?” Devon probed.

“That was about Paul never giving us information until we go to him and ask. I’m sick of the way he does everything on his time. Don’t you find that the least bit shady?”

“I don’t know if I find it shady so to speak, but I agree with your statement. I’ll talk to him about his follow-up needing to be timelier. Okay?”

“No, not okay. Tomorrow, when I get back from wherever it is I’m going with David, I’m going into the office and having a talk with Paul myself. Unless I change my mind, I’m firing him. I’m sick of dealing with this. We have more than enough people working for us now. We don’t need him anymore. I’m sure Bobby has someone who can replace Paul.”

“Mac…please don’t make any hasty decisions. I’ll support you either way, but I think you should take some time and rethink this.”

“Oh, fuck that! Devon, you know, as well as I, this has been bothering both of us for some time now. Why do I need to take time to think about it?”

“Because you’re upset with me right now, and I think you might be taking that frustration out on the wrong person.”

Macyn whipped her head around and glared at Devon, her eyes narrow slits. The urge to slap him was overwhelming, but she knew it wouldn’t accomplish anything. Instead, she changed the subject.

“When will Bobby be here?”

“He’ll be here soon enough, but you aren’t changing the subject. Although I already know why you’re upset with me, you need to tell me. Get it out of your system.” He stepped closer.

“I’m pissed because you asked me to marry you. I’m pissed because you think you can tell me what I need to do in regards to David. I’m pissed because my life is spinning out of control, and I can’t stop it.” She collapsed onto the bed in tears.

“Mac, if I’d known you were going to be angry with me for asking you to marry me, I wouldn’t have.
